Dr Jacqueline Tan is a hand surgeon in Singapore with over 18 years of experience in managing hand, wrist, and nerve conditions. Formerly the Head of Department of Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery at Singapore General Hospital, she has continued to contribute significantly to her profession.

Upon the completion of her training as a hand surgeon in Singapore, Dr Tan was awarded the prestigious Health Manpower Development Plan scholarship by the Ministry of Health (MOH).
Completed a one-year advanced fellowship in Taiwan under the tutelage of internationally-acclaimed Hand and Orthopedic Microsurgeon – Professor Yuan-Kun Tu
Dr Tan’s field of expertise is in early and late brachial plexus reconstruction, peripheral nerve disorders, reconstructive microsurgery of the extremities and wrist disorders.

Common Hand, Wrist & Upper Limb Symptoms

Numbness in the hand & fingers

Common causes of numbness include carpal tunnel syndrome, cubital tunnel syndrome, thoracic outlet syndrome and injuries to the nerves, including brachial plexus injuries. The patient may also experience tingling sensation, burning sensation and even pain in the distribution of the affected nerve. Left untreated, one may experience weakness or even complete paralysis.

Common causes of pain include trigger finger, De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, inflammatory and degenerative arthritis. Hand and wrist pain can also be due to repetitive strain, trauma and sports injuries resulting in ligamentous injuries, fractures and dislocations of the hand and wrist. The patient may also experience swelling, limited mobility and progressive deformity of the hand and wrist. Left untreated, one may experience problems with activities of daily living with decreased quality of life.

Lumps In The Hand & Wrist

Common diagnoses for lumps include ganglion cyst, lipoma, sebaceous cyst, pigmented villonodular synovitis and enchondroma which are usually benign tumours. Less common diagnoses include inflammatory tenosynovitis, gout and cancerous growths. Before leaving these growths alone, one should have them assessed by a specialist to exclude malignancy which if left untreated, may result in pain, loss of sensory and motor function, amputation and may even become life threatening.
